Summary: Arguably the best wave in Colorado. It is one of the largest, most consistent, and busiest river waves. It is definitely worth surfing if you’re anywhere in the area. River right offers a wide, green wave that has great eddy access. River left forms a nice shoulder that can get steep, but loses its eddy as the flow rises.

Location: Google Map Link. From I-70, take the Glenwood Springs West exit. Take the road south across the river then make an immediate left turn. Park in one of the four paved spots, in the dirt lot across the street, or along the street.

Difficulty: At low flows, 5,000 CFS and less, this is a good beginner wave. Above 5,000 CFS this is a great intermediate to advanced wave.

Hazards: On river right, the water is fast and shallow beneath the bridge. Do not attempt to standup. There has been at least one near drowning due to a foot entrapment here.

Ideal flows: 5,000+ CFS. 5,000 CFS is ideal for learning or surfing a longer board or a SUP. Wait for 10,000+ CFS if you want to shortboard.

Gauge: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=09085100

Best time of year: Spring, after the snow melt is in full swing and the gauge climbs above 10,000 CFS.

Amenities: There is paid camping nearby and free camping if you’re willing to drive a bit further to National Forest. There is an indoor hot spring in town, as well as free hot springs outside of Carbondale. For food, there are plenty of good places to eat in downtown Glenwood Springs.
